Somalia loses African Union peace and security membership

The Somali government has this afternoon lost its seat in the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, after competing for the seat in Djibouti. At the African Union summit in Addis Ababa, the delegates elected Djibouti to the seat, which means that Djibouti has once again won and defended the seat.

Djibouti received 19 votes from the electoral commission, while Somalia received 13 votes. Somalia has made significant efforts to gain the support of African Union countries during the election campaign.

Djibouti will remain a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council until 2022-2025. And she already has two years.

The Somali foreign minister led a delegation of Somali diplomats and delegates to the African Union, who made every effort to secure this important seat for Somalia.
